LET'S LOVINGLY HOLD EACH OTHER TO HIGHER STANDARDS
Let’s start a revolution, and let’s start it out small. Let’s move macro to micro, to our intimate conversations with each other.
Let’s hold hands and each other accountable. It is uncomfortable enough to grow, especially while taking sides against one another. Let’s stay on each others’ team, while helping to guide each other to a place of kindness and open-mindedness.
Kindness is not equal to niceness. Niceness is agreeability, perfect appropriateness and passivity. Kindness is consideration, cooperation and respect. While the words overlap somewhat in definition, kindness is not passive agreement. You can still be kind and disagree, learn and grow.
Open-mindedness is your willingness to incorporate new information and change. It’s the act of challenging your habits and pre-conceived notions. It’s about synthesizing the data making better choices with your words and actions.
The point of practicing kindness and open-mindedness is not to get one another to change our political views, but instead to positively affect the way we treat each other. I, like so many, think of Maya Angelou.
“I did then what I knew how to do. Now that I know better, I do better.”
I have been wrong in the past, and I will continue to be wrong as I stumble my way to a better version of myself. And if you’re human, I bet this applies to you, too. Let’s look each other in the eye, be kind and hold each other up.
Please don’t take this statement as my recommended solution to everything. The world is complex and I’m not here to oversimplify. Don’t take this as a salve to soften atrocities. I cannot and will not be another voice spiritually bypassing the divisiveness and hatred toward one another that we have suffered and are suffering as a country.
